Problem: In order to protect wider population and suppress the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is necessary to disinfect potentially contaminated surfaces that are in direct contact with possibly infected people. Disinfection of contaminated surfaces in the open, especially in large cities, is expensive and requires a large number of workers and machinery to be engaged in the process. In places with larger circulation of people (hospitals, public institutions, supermarkets, schools), it is advisable to perform disinfection of people's bodies, clothes and shoes in order to stop potential carriers of the virus to spread it. The researchers found that coronaviruses can be neutralized within one minute if surfaces are disinfected with 62-71% alcohol.
Solution: The solution uses coal dust suppression technology from the mining industry to create the tunnels for disinfection and decontamination of persons and equipment by aerosol spraying of disinfectant based on 75% alcohol. The tunnel has already been tested and its main benefit is that it can disinfect a significant number of people in a short period of time (650+ persons per hour or an entire small town in a day). It is independent of the power supply and can use its own generator. Tunnels would be installed in high-frequency places such as health centres, border crossings, immigrant reception camps, temporary hospitals, schools, public buildings, etc. The solution enables all vulnerable groups to have a simple and free solution for complete disinfection and decontamination from viruses and bacteria through a simple process that costs less than 40 dinars per person.
Additional info: The proposed disinfection tunnel demonstrates high efficiency in terms of the number of persons it could disinfect per hour and was already used at the Covid-19 centre at Belgrade Fair. The product needs to be certified and the efficacy of disinfection to be tested, to determine whether users need protective gear for their eyes and whether the tunnel suits only individuals wearing single-use clothing and exiting/entering a contamination zone.
